The Cottage Bed

We love our newest shop addition: the Cottage Bed in a dreamy sea mist finish. Believe it or not, the soft, mellow aqua turns out to be a great neutral.

Here we've dressed the bed in contemporary brights...

This time a romantic pastel and floral palette...

And finally ethereal white...

Whatever your taste, this versatile color can be a part of your own bedroom sanctuary.

A Tale of Two Bedrooms

We recently completed two bedrooms in a Key West home, and couldn't be happier with the results.

The client wanted something feminine for a second bedroom, but needed to achieve a stronger, more man-friendly statement for the master bedroom.

As you can see, we went with a feminine, French style in this guest bedroom:

Those dark walls needed a little contrast and the upholstered and painted furniture did this nicely. Subtle colors and traditional prints along with some warm yellow accents pulled everything together.

Then in the master bedroom, we left "cozy" behind.

When you admire pretty spaces, but share a bedroom with a man who needs large, sturdy furniture suited to broad shoulders and long legs, you may assume that you need to choose between the two. But this is far from the truth. While ruffles and floral prints may not be appropriate, strong furniture statements with a pretty wall color and coordinating textiles makes for a very satisfying compromise. This elegant four poster bed appealed to both husband and wife, and the chocolate stripe in the Pine Cone Hill bedding tied in nicely with the dark wood. A simple love seat with delicate pillows softened the room without taking away from the clean lines.

It's always a challenge to design personal spaces for couples, but this came together beautifully. And knowing that your clients are equally thrilled with their room is doubly rewarding.

Jo's High Point Market Report (The Last Chapter)

Our last day featured a final (and a little scary) trend, NeoGoth.

We noticed quite a bit of over sized and over-the-top Gothic inspired furniture. As in the following two beds.

Tell me, could you fall asleep in either of these, thinking that any moment, Dracula or maybe Liberace might come flying into the room?

I remember this as being a trend in the 80's. Are any of you old enough to remember when Cher had a Home Design catalog? These beds would have fit right in. Actually, I remember seeing Cher at Market that season. We were going up the escalator and she was coming down. I was mesmerized by this vision in a huge, fluffy gray fur coat flowing open over a skin tight black cat suit and thigh high, black patent, spike heeled boots. All black curls, makeup and attitude. Then, the moment was over. She was downstairs and we were up, almost as if it didn't happen. But it was a moment to remember.

But back to the present. I'll end on a brighter note with two pretty beds.

One a painted white headboard framing an upholstered panel of abstract turquoise and white nautilus shell print. Very fresh and beachy.

Then a whimsical canopy bed by Traditions made entirely of white painted twigs and dressed up in lovely green and white linens with a turquoise throw. The picture doesn't do it justice. It was lovely and ethereal.

And a final humorous note - me next to the biggest chair ever matched to a huge turtle shaped footstool. Terry wanted me to sit on it a la Lily Tomlin but I couldn't even climb up on it!

And finally, home in Key West, the most eccentric little airport in the US.

In conclusion, forget the trends. Just buy what you love. If you are a retailer, your store will reflect who you are, and standing in it all day every day will bring you joy. If you are a customer, you will end up with a home that will make you happy all your life. And isn't that what this design business is all about?

A Well Feathered Nest

The mood of your bedroom is expressed in great part by the bedding you choose.

From clean, crisp white

to knock-out bright!

From soft and feminine

to clean-lined serenity.

From traditional

to contemporary.

Whatever you choose, your private sanctuary should express what comforts and inspires you. How do you feather your nest?

More Pictures of Our Work at Pendleton Estate

We recently shared some pictures of a home we "styled" for an open house. Most of what we did was dress up the beds and add lamps and accessories, but it really did make a huge difference (proof that little changes can go a long way).

Our pictures were taken during the evening event, so they were a bit dark. But I just got copies of some professional pictures that were taken earlier in the day and thought I'd post them.

This really was such a fun project. It was challenging to try to keep the integrity of the owner's personal style which tended toward dark and neutral, but add a little life to the rooms with color. I think we achieved this with the colors we selected - lovely, but not too sweet.

Kate's Key West Style: Twin Beds

I've always had a bit of a thing for twin beds. Maybe it's a vestige of the envy I had for those friends who shared a room with a sister (I know - the grass is always greener, as I'm sure they longed for their own rooms). Maybe it's the cute factor. Maybe it's simply the soothing symmetry of the arrangement... Who knows - but I just love them.

While growing up, I never had a twin size bed, but I did have two tiny bedrooms in my twenties that required tiny beds. And I loved my sweet little alcove retreats. So I can attest to the possibility of comfort - even luxury given the right bedding and decor.

I got the idea for featuring twin beds today while perusing the gallery on MyHomeIdeas. I came across these two very Floridian style bedrooms with twin beds pushed together:

I've slept in attached twins before and it's not the ideal arrangement if you tend to roll into the middle of the bed. But those rooms really are charming.

I tried to look for other online images of twin bedrooms that captured some Key West style, and let me tell you - easier said than done! I had a hard time finding twins in general.

But here is an assortment, all of which include some island-style elements:

turquoise and bold floral accents add a little tropical punch

a muted blue and white color scheme can offset the riot of color right outside the window (okay - maybe not that window - but in Key West, I mean...)

another muted palette with a splash of color on the pillows (and a coral lamp to boot!)

aqua walls and bedding with what looks to be another piece of coral on the bedside table
What - did you think that Key West style couldn't include subtle color and simple decor? Not so - that famous water boasts many shades of blue.

I bet those last four pictures are from houses well above the Mason Dixon line - further proving (if I'm right that is...) that a little Key West color or detail can work in any room.

Shop Favorite: The Bed

We fell in love with this bed and bought it because it looked so much like the architechture of Victorian cottages with their signature "gingerbread" trim.

It's made by hand in upstate New York by a family who got their start making furniture out of architectural salvage from demolished houses. Now, years later, they reproduce those elements to create the furniture and then give each piece a custom distressed finish.

It is the most attention getting piece in our shop - a real eye-catcher. We put it in the front display window and change the bedding to show off new quilt and bedding designs. I would say half our new customers who walk in want a closer look at The Bed.

We don't sell that many of them because it is really large scale, but it truly captures the spirit of the Key West Cottage style. The funny thing is, women come in and ecstasize over it, then leave and reappear with a male companion (husband, boyfriend, carpenter...who knows what). They have lots of furtive conversations while examining the bed in detail looking underneath, taking measurements - obviously aiming to make their own version. They then slip out as if we wouldn't notice. I'll bet Key West has many ersatz reproductions of The Bed made by handymen all over the island. I say, great - if they can scale it down to fit in a little room, good for them. Enjoy - it's a wonderful bed!
