A Fresh Spring Look from Lee

Have you seen the new Lee ad that ran in the April issue of House Beautiful?

Love that green! It reminds me of the new shoots that are sprouting everywhere, announcing the end of Winter. While it's never Winter in Key West, I live in the DC area, and we're SO ready for some warm sunny days!

From what part of the world are you visiting? Are you waving goodbye to snow and ice?

The Cottage Bed

We love our newest shop addition: the Cottage Bed in a dreamy sea mist finish. Believe it or not, the soft, mellow aqua turns out to be a great neutral.

Here we've dressed the bed in contemporary brights...

This time a romantic pastel and floral palette...

And finally ethereal white...

Whatever your taste, this versatile color can be a part of your own bedroom sanctuary.

That's Refreshing

You may remember that Terry and I attended the High Point Furniture Market in April. We posted lots of pictures, and we were very excited about the new things we wanted for the shop. Well, Market is not exactly instant gratification, and just now the things we bought are starting to trickle in.

This is one of my favorite sofas. I love the soft aqua and cream stripes and the pretty antique white spool legs. It's delicate and feminine, but definitely comfy.

This is the matching chair covered in one of my favorite fabrics called "Treasure." And I especially love the ceramic stool in washed aqua. It's such a serene scene and the first thing our customers see when they walk in the shop. It's the perfect antidote for the Key West July heat.

A little refreshment for the eyes.

Subdued Style Key West

We're currently working on a proposal for a lovely space with a subdued color palette.

A quick peek at the furniture...

This table...

...with these chairs:

(sorry for the tiny picture - but I only had a thumbnail)

And this coffee table for the living room:

Did you recognize that zebra print fabric? It's one of our favorite neutrals from Jackie VonTobel.

We can't include all details now - but if things work out, we may eventually be able to post pictures of the finished product.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jo's High Point Market Report (Part Two)

To follow up yesterday's report, we're back with more High Point highlights:

Wood Finishes
We noticed far less washed oak (grey finish) although we did see a prettier whitewashed or pickled look, and bought a few little tables and bench as that mixes in well with our Key West colors. We also noticed many showrooms including Lee, with dark, very antiquey pieces mixed with contemporary neutral upholstery. Sorry, no pictures here. I totally zoned out on the dark furniture although much of it was very handsome.

Oriental Style Rugs
Again - these were mixed with contemporary neutral furniture and used in unexpected ways, like upholstered benches and pillows. At Lee the Oriental upholstered ottomans were selling so fast that they had to bring a new truckload of them in every other day!

This didn't apply to us in Key West but we did find a fabulous Soumak (ancient Turkish rug stitch construction) woven in a contemporary design of giant seahorses that is perfect for Style Key West. We bought it in Turquoise and also in soft lime green.

Decorative Glass
This trend that we saw again and again in accessory and lamp showrooms suited us to a T. We bought some beautiful accessories shown in the following pictures.

I thought the green glass ball chandelier was fabulous. Too bad it's not for Key West cottage style.

That does it for today. Tune in tomorrow for the scary conclusion.

A Knack for Reinvention

DIY, refurbishing old furniture, finding possibility in junk yards... All very popular right now. And none of it is new to me. While growing up, I knew many creative people who had this kind of vision.

Two that immediately come to mind are my mother of course, and also the mother of one of my many babysitting charges during high school.

Rebecca MacKenzie was mother to a cute little boy named Alexander. But in the design world, she was known as Rebecca Cross, a talented artist who at that time, painted furniture and floors with bold, bright motifs. I spent a lot of time in their house (actually two houses since they moved at some point) and saw much of her work for her own family as well as what she created for clients.

My mother had some furniture made for our house using architectural salvage and then painted it with various finishes she developed. She even started a business with her best friend, Barry Remley called Salvations (while she is no longer a partner, she still serves on the board). All of this made for frequent weekend jaunts to places like the DC institution, The Brass Knob.

While I can't say that I had the appreciation that I should back then for these creative women in my life (give me a break - I was a kid!), it did give me a different perspective on what may appear to be old junk. I can now see potential that may not have been apparent to me had my parents been accountants. You never know - but I attribute this appreciation to my early influences.

So (yes -there was a point to this) when I came across a belle maison post about Knack Studios in Greenville, SC, I was instantly confronted by the familiar. And I found the way that they take something old or plain and turn it into something new and extraordinary to be truly inspired.

This work combines everything I remember. They refurbish old furniture, they create new furniture out of discarded scraps, and they completely reinvent everything they do using finishes, color and painted motifs. Knack Studios brings art to furniture design and creates functional pieces that are absolutely unique.

Comfort and Style

It's Spring Break in my school district - so anything I post this week will be done while children tear my house apart (as I write this I hear screams and running water upstairs - I'm afraid to go look...)

So I'll just post a few pretty pictures here today.

My mother feels very strongly that beautiful interiors can also be comfortable - and she won't order any sofas or chairs for the shop that don't offer a comfy place to sit. Of course, this is a bit ironic since I remember a college boyfriend claiming that there wasn't one comfortable chair in my parents' house...but that was before they moved to Key West!

I did a little browsing through some lovely rooms that embrace this attitude, and her are my favorite images:

Happy Monday!

Liberty of London: The Real McCoy

After beginning the week with Target's wildly popular Liberty of London line, I thought we'd end it with a look at my Liberty of London favorites from their website.

First - the rich textiles:

And how about these throw pillows? I love them on their own or as a set:

The little sketch books make me wish I sketched:

I think I'd look smashing (that's old school British for "awesome") in this apron...

...AND in these scarves:

The perfect little sundress:

Is this shower cap too much?

I'd like a cup like this for my toothbrush:

A girl can never have too many bags:

And finally - two lovely pieces of furniture:

I think I'm all Liberty of Londoned out now. Have a great weekend!
